The shop is deliberately located outside the tourist centre, in one of the city’s most diverse working-class neighbourhoods. That doesn’t make The Stud any less accessible. Quite the opposite. A Neighbourhood Coffeeshop with a Story of Its Own
The history of The Stud reads like a chapter in Amsterdam’s coffeeshop history. In the early years, it was more like a living room than a shop, with a close-knit group of friends gathering under the old Pitbull logo. During a police raid, the stash was hidden in the pipe of a gas heater that never actually worked. It wasn’t until 1982 that it officially became a coffeeshop, complete with rules and a licence. In 1991, the pit bull disappeared and was replaced by the bull, with “stud” referring to a breeding bull, which you can still see in the logo today. The shop moved from Niasstraat to its current location on Molukkenstraat, but the atmosphere remained the same.
