Hans Egstorf
Hans Egstorf is one of the oldest and best-known bakeries of Amsterdam and has been known since 1898 for its artisanal stroopwafels. In the monumental bakery on the Spuistraat, the stroopwafels are still baked fresh before your eyes according to a traditional family recipe. The smell of warm caramel and freshly baked waffles draws both Amsterdammers and visitors from all over the world inside every day. Besides the famous stroopwafels, you also find croissants, pastries and other classic baker’s products there. The bakery is housed in a beautiful Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) building, designed by the famous Amsterdam architect Gerrit van Arkel, which makes a visit extra special. Hans Egstorf now has several branches in the city, but the historic bakery remains the beating heart of the brand.
Where does the name come from?
The bakery is named after Hans Egstorf, the baker who founded the business at the end of the 19th century. His name grew into a household name in Amsterdam and has symbolised traditional craftsmanship and fresh stroopwafels for more than 125 years.
Fun fact
In the historic branch the stroopwafels are baked à la minute and served warm straight away. As a result, the caramel filling is still deliciously soft and gooey – exactly as a stroopwafel is originally intended. Many visitors find that a warm Hans Egstorf stroopwafel is hardly comparable to the packaged variant from the supermarket.
