Where does the name come from?

The bar is named after the Pulitzer Amsterdam, the luxury hotel of which it is part. That hotel owes its name to Peter Pulitzer, grandson of Joseph Pulitzer – the famous newspaper publisher after whom the Pulitzer Prize is also named. In 1970 Peter Pulitzer bought twelve dilapidated canal houses and transformed them into the first five-star hotel in Amsterdam. Today the hotel consists of no fewer than 25 historic canal houses.

Pulitzer Amsterdam does not consist of one building, but of 25 interconnected 17th- and 18th-century canal houses. Behind the front door of the cocktail bar there is therefore literally a maze of historic houses, hidden passages and inner gardens – one of the most special hotel complexes in Amsterdam.
