Where does the terrace culture come from?
Amsterdam terrace culture received a huge boost especially from the second half of the 20th century onwards. Municipal rules became more relaxed and hospitality venues increasingly made use of the squares, canals and wide pavements. By now terraces are an indispensable part of the streetscape and are just as much a part of Amsterdam as the canals and bicycles.

Did you know that Amsterdammers are known for their first terrace day of the year? As soon as the sun breaks through for a moment – even in the middle of winter – the terraces immediately fill up. Coat on, sunglasses on and enjoying a drink: for many Amsterdammers that is the sign that the city is coming back to life.
