Five Spots For Amsterdam’s Best Fries

Call them fries, chips or patat — just don't start a language debate while twenty hungry people are waiting behind you. These five addresses deliver fresh-cut potato, a crisp outside, and enough sauce to make your white sneakers nervous. Note: Doardi from the original list has permanently closed; Café Beurre now occupies its old spot, so Doardi has been replaced below by Fabel Friet.

Friet van Oost

Friet van Oost cuts its own potatoes, rinses and dries them, then fries them in plant-based oil. The result is sturdy, golden-brown fries without that stale-fryer-oil taste. Vegetarian snacks, burgers and chicken are on offer too, but the potato is the main event.

Fizeaustraat 15.

Pro tip
At Vleminckx, decide on your sauce before you reach the counter. The choice is huge, and the queue behind you has little patience for your inner debate between samurai and andalouse. Find a quiet spot around the Spui afterwards for your cone.

Frietboutique

Oud-Zuid even dresses up snack-bar food in a clean shirt. Frietboutique uses sustainable Agria potatoes and fries them with the skin on. Besides fries, you'll find snacks from well-known Amsterdam makers and ice cream for anyone with room left after a cone. Nicely done.

Johannes Verhulststraat 107H.

Tourist Trap Checker
Fabel Friet draws queues for its Parmesan and truffle mayo. That doesn't make the fries bad, but the wait and the popular topping are now part of the experience.
Do
Want good potato without the social-media circus? Vita's Patat or Friet van Oost are at least as logical a choice.
Don't
Assume a busy queue automatically means the best fries — at Fabel Friet, the wait is part of the draw, not proof of superiority.

Vita’s Patat

This stall has stood at the Dappermarkt since 1972 and is now run by the fourth generation. The fries are cut and fried fresh on the spot. No truffle parade or TikTok circus, just a solid market portion at a normal price. Combine it with grocery shopping at the market, and finish your fries before a passing cyclist decides the pavement is their lane.

Dappermarkt, at the corner of Dapperstraat and Commelinstraat.

Vleminckx de Sausmeester

Vleminckx has sold Flemish fries from a tiny counter on Voetboogstraat since 1957. The choice of sauces is almost unreasonably large: from classic mayonnaise and saté sauce to samurai and andalouse. There are no tables, so grab your cone and find a quiet spot around the Spui.

Voetboogstraat 33.

Fabel Friet

Fabel Friet started small on Runstraat and now has several locations. The fresh Agria fries with Parmesan and truffle mayo are the crowd magnet. Yes, there can be a queue. It usually moves quickly, but no need to pretend waiting for potatoes is a cultural highlight.

Including Runstraat 1.

Quick Summary
Friet van Oost and Vita's Patat keep it fresh and straightforward, Frietboutique gives the potato an Oud-Zuid makeover, and Vleminckx delivers the sauce selection. Fabel Friet is the busy crowd favourite. Pick your queue, your sauce, and a safe distance from white sneakers.
