Café P96

Café P96 is a beloved neighbourhood café on the Prinsengracht, in the middle of the Jordaan. Since 1975 it has been a fixed meeting place for local residents and visitors looking for an easygoing Amsterdam atmosphere. During the day you can go there for coffee, a lunch or a drink by the water, while in the evening the café transforms into a lively place for drinks. The spacious terrace – with a view of the Prinsengracht and the Westertoren – is one of the big attractions. Inside, the wooden bar, good music and informal atmosphere ensure that many guests keep coming back. P96 is still a family business and is known for its hospitality and authentic character.
Where does the name come from?
The name P96 is very literal: the ‘P’ stands for Prinsengracht and 96 is the house number of the café. A simple name that has by now been a household name in the Jordaan for well over fifty years.
Fun fact
In front of Café P96 lies a characteristic terrace boat that has belonged to the café since the 1980s. This floating terrace boat grew into a beloved meeting place for the neighbourhood and even became the subject of a successful campaign to preserve it. For many Amsterdammers the terrace boat is by now just as iconic as the café itself.
