Café Schiller (Art Deco interieur)

On the lively Rembrandtplein lies Café Schiller, one of the most characteristic cafés in Amsterdam. Since its opening in 1913 it has been a beloved meeting place for artists, writers, actors and Amsterdammers who love history and atmosphere. The café is known above all for its almost completely preserved Art Deco interior, with original lamps, wooden panelling, stained-glass windows and stylish furniture. As soon as you step inside, it feels as if you are going back to the Amsterdam of the 1920s. Despite its monumental appearance, Café Schiller is still an accessible place for a cup of coffee, lunch, drinks or dinner. It is one of the few cafés in the city where so many authentic details have been preserved.
Where does the name come from?
Café Schiller is named after the Schiller family, who had the neighbouring Hotel Schiller built at the beginning of the 20th century. The family opened a café, restaurant and hotel here that soon grew into a meeting point for the cultural elite of Amsterdam. The name has remained unchanged ever since and is now part of Amsterdam heritage.
Fun fact
Did you know that the café still has original Art Deco lamps and furniture from the early 20th century? There is also a special stained-glass artwork by the artist Joop Sjollema from 1948. As a result, a visit to Café Schiller feels not only like having a drink, but also like a step into a living piece of Amsterdam history.
