Coja Snacks
Coja Snacks is a family-run neighbourhood snack bar on Marathonweg in Amsterdam’s Stadionbuurt. Established in 1984, it combines the familiar Dutch snackbar counter with a much broader menu of Belgian-style chips, satay sauce, kapsalon, shoarma, burgers, falafel and other vegetarian options. The blog’s preferred order is double-fried chips with the house-made satay sauce, although a chicken or lamb kapsalon is suggested for a larger appetite. Coja is valued less as a novelty destination than as the dependable local address people remember when hunger strikes late. Following a major fire in 2024, the renovated business returned with a brighter interior and an added coffee bar while retaining its family ownership and neighbourhood focus.
Where does the name come from?
Coja’s own history page documents when the snack bar opened and identifies Mohamed and Hassan as the family members behind it, but it does not explain what “Coja” means or how the name was chosen. No sufficiently reliable independent explanation was found, so its precise origin remains undocumented.
Fun fact
After fire destroyed the snack bar in the summer of 2024, local residents raised €11,000 within three weeks to support it. Coja reopened in May 2025. The former train-style seating could not be saved, but the original counter survived and remains a physical connection with the business that opened in 1984.
